"Uplifting Experiences" at the Expense of Reverence

We don’t decide on how worship should be, God does. From our reading for this week, Duncan offers sound statements as to why it is so risky and dangerous to think that God does not care how we worship as long as we worship Him (33,37). This confronts me with the modern notion of worship as we are bombarded every week with question like, “Does it really matter how we worship as long as we mean it?” and the answer is that it does matter. The stories of Nadab, Abihu, Saul (1 Sam. 15:22), and Uzzah are examples that God does care how we worship. Burroughs also reminds us that we worship a God we personally know, and who will be sanctified in those who draw near Him. Therefore, we worship Him with reverence (Heb 12:28). How often have we, in worship, overemphasized ‘uplifting experiences’ at the expense of reverence?
